Description: Come find what wild edibles are growing in City Park. Learn about food that many "modern" people have dismissed as weeds that used to feed popluations. Kirk Morrison will be leading a group of up to 20 and we expect to find chanterells, wood ears. clouds and possibly oyster mushrooms. Also milkweed, elderberries, huckleberries, bull briars ( wild asparagus) silk thistle should be coming in. But since the wildlife out there is foraging too there is no way to be sure. Description: The Nola Locavores is teaming up with Nola Social Ride and Parkway Partners to stage the 1st Annual New Orleans Eat Local Challenge Urban Farm Bike Tour!
Registration and check-in for the bike tour will begin at 9:00AM at the Zeitgeist, 1618 O. C. Haley Blvd. on Sunday June 9th! The tour will depart at 10:00AM. A schedule of stops will be posted as soon as the route is finalized, for those that want to join in along the way.
The event is free and will include water stops and some fresh local food snacks. What better way is there to explore the pockets of local edible flora than our most sustainable, efficient method of travel available: Pedal Power!
The route is still being planned but will include stops at Grow Dat Youth Farm and Parkway Partners Community Gardens + more. The full map will be revealed shortly.
There are going to be t-shirts for the event and they can be purchased online at the link below ($10 or $5 for Participants in the Eat Local Challenge). The tees can be picked up on the day of the ride. The proceeds from the sales of the tees helps buy the water and snacks. Description: This is a hands on (actually mouth on and nose on) presentation with fresh and dried samples of edible and useful plants. A brief overview of each plant is presented and then participants are encouraged to graze on the salad plants. Freshly brewed teas from an assortment of dried plants such as New Jersey Tea leaves, blackberry leaves, persimmon leaves, and others will be prepared for sipping. Jars of dried leaves of red bay, mountain mint, and other spices will be available for all to smell. The presentation lasts about one hour with 30 minutes or so for the tasting etc.
Dr. Charles Allen is a Senior Botanist with Colorado State University stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana He and his wife Susan own and operate Allen Acres B&B, a nature oriented paradise in west central Louisiana where he organizes and leads many area field trips. Charles is a retired Professor of Biology from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a charter member and past President of the Louisiana Native Plant Society (LNPS). He is the coauthor of “Edible Plants of the Gulf South” and has presented edible plant talks and walks to many groups not only in Louisiana but also in Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas. He is also the coauthor of recently published “Wildflowers of Louisiana” plus “Trees Shrubs and Woody Vines of Louisiana” and “Grasses of Louisiana, 3rd ed”. The four books will be available for purchase.
